The world champion Glenn Howard rink from the Coldwater and District Curling Club launched a new season of action this past weekend.
Competing at the Shorty Jenkins Classic from Sept. 17-20 in Brockville, Howard and teammates Richard Hart, Brent Laing and Craig Savill won $3,900 en route to an appearance in the semifinals.
Howard and company posted a 4-1 record in round-robin play, then won 7-2 over Peter Steski of Sarnia to move into a semifinal against former Olympic champion Brad Gushue from Newfoundland and Labrador.
Howard ended up on the losing end of a 5-4 score against Gushue, who went on to claim the $9,400 first prize with an 8-6 win over former world champion Kevin Martin from Edmonton.
Howard returns to competitive action Oct. 1, when his team battles at the Twin Anchors Invitational in Vernon, B.C.
The Sherry Middaugh rink, also based in Coldwater, will begin its season Sept. 25 at the Schmirler Curling Classic, to be held in Regina.
