DUMFRIES curlers are gearing up for the Scottish championships and have started their training.

The under 21 ladies team of Heather Morton, Naiomi Whyte, Fiona Telfer and Sophie Jackson has qualified automatically for the competition in Aberdeen because there are fewer female teams.

But as the men’s team of Christopher Howat, Zack Stewart, Paul Donaldson and Ross Whyte has the task of qualifying, training began in earnest at the Ice Bowl this week. The qualification rounds take place in January.

Graham Sloan at the Ice Bowl said: “These guys are the sports future, so it’s important we give them the very best chance we can.

“They’re young teams and will learn a lot from the experience. It’s an exciting time for curling in the region.”

This weekend both the men’s and ladies teams will be making the short trip to Lockerbie to take on the local rivals.

The Scottish championships are held at Aberdeen in February.
