Lakes Curling Club began their 30th season of curling with a club Open House, which was held Saturday, at the Lakes Curling Club, located just behind Minnkota Recycling, on Hwy 59 north.

The interest in curling has continued to build since the sport was added to the Olympics.

In addition to the Club Open House, “open nights” of curling will also be held every Monday evening in December from 6-8 p.m. Anyone interested in curling is welcomed to attend.

Membership continues to grow each year, with over 200 plus curlers involved in league play every night of the week.

The current membership comes from Detroit Lakes, Frazee, Perham, Audubon, Lake Park, Hawley, Fargo, Pelican Rapids, Fergus Falls, and Mahnomen. Lakes Curling Club is open to both male and females, with a mixed-couples league on Monday evenings.

League play begins on Tuesday, Nov. 30, and ends in mid-March.

Fridays and weekends are reserved for the numerous Canadian bon spiels and other tournaments the club hosts each year.

According to club President, Chris Steen, Bonspiels are not the only activities that take place during the curling season.

“For several years, our club has worked closely with the school district, introducing the sport of curling to over 900 plus junior and senior high youth, every school year,” Steen said.

$45,000 in cash awards available to clubs in need

Monsanto Canada’s “Imagine a Better House” community curling club improvement program is back for another year with enhanced funding of $45,000 in cash awards available to rural-based curling clubs in Western Canada who need a hand to improve their clubs.

The “Imagine a Better House” community curling club program gives rural-based curling clubs in Western Canada the opportunity to secure funding to undertake development or improvement projects at their local curling club. A total of 14 cash prizes will be awarded in 2011 – a Grand Prize of $10,000 will go to the winning entry, along with three (3) Second Place prizes of $5,000 and ten (10) Third Place prizes of $2,000. All winners will be notified and announced publicly in late February.

Over the past three years, Monsanto has provided over $190,000 in cash awards to 70 different rural community clubs across the Prairies. Last year’s grand prize winner was the 150-member Moosomin Curling Club in Moosomin, Saskatchewan.

“Curling is a game embraced by people of all ages in rural communities and the curling club is often the centre of social life in small towns,” said Trish Jordan, Monsanto Canada’s public affairs director. “We see tremendous need out there for a multitude of improvement projects and this is one way we feel we can give back to the rural communities who help make our business successful.”

Cash prizes can be utilized by the winning entrants for anything from building improvements, to new equipment or scoreboards or maybe even a special event to support and promote the sport of curling at the local rink. The most common challenges faced by local clubs last year related to building enhancements or repairs or upgrades of equipment to improve the quality of ice within the facility.
More information and posters profiling the “Imagine a Better House” community curling club program have been mailed to curling clubs and local retail outlets across Western Canada.

Interested clubs can apply on-line at www.monsanto.ca. Applicants just need to click on the “Imagine a Better House” icon and tell Monsanto a little about their club, the community in which it resides and why the curling club is in need of a little assistance. There is even an opportunity to upload a couple of photos to support your case. Applications can also be mailed to the Monsanto Canada head office in Winnipeg. All applications must be received by Jan. 31, 2011 to be eligible.

Once applications close, a group of curling enthusiasts and Monsanto Canada employees will review each of the submissions and rank them based on degree of need expressed by the local curling club and the creativity of the submission.

The United States’ largest curling club will take over a shuttered ice arena in St. Paul to see if it can help deal with high demand and a lack of space.

The Biff Adams Ice Arena, owned by Ramsey County and shut down this year, had been eyed as a tennis facility by the nonprofit St. Paul Urban Tennis Program, but the group is passing because the building’s ceiling is too low.

Enter the St. Paul Curling Club, the nation’s largest with 1,180 members. It reached a deal with the county that allows the club to alter the ice surface, which had been used primarily for youth and high school hockey, and to use it through March 2011.

The curling club won’t pay rent, but it will be responsible for utility bills and managing the rink. The club also will pay the county $7,000 to start up the refrigeration unit now and shut it down in spring.

On Tuesday, the County Board unanimously approved the agreement.

The club has been in its building near Mackubin Street and Selby Avenue since 1912 and will continue to operate there as well. Biff Adams, at Western and Minnehaha Avenues in Frogtown, is about a mile away.

“We’ve been nearing full capacity for a few years now,” said Bob Hedstrom, club president.

The club will be able to fit five “sheets” of ice into the Biff Adams rink. Up to 300 new curlers could be accommodated, said club board member Greg Walsh.

The club and county will see how things go and talk about what might happen next in March.

The county has been reviewing the status of its ice arenas because of new suburban rinks and declining demand. It closed Biff Adams this year because it lost its users.

FAIRBANKS—Most of the top curlers in Alaska will converge on the Fairbanks Curling Club this weekend to compete in one of the richest cash bonspiels in the United States this season.

Twelve rinks, including two from Anchorage, are competing for $12,500 in prize money during the four-day curling extravaganza, starting Thursday and running through Sunday evening.

The field is split into two six-team divisions for round-robin play. The top three teams in each division advance to the qualifiers or championship event, while the remaining six teams drop into the consolation event.

The round-robin portion of the bonspiel starts at 7 p.m. Thursday, with subsequent rounds starting at 2 and 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Quarterfinal matches are at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, followed by semifinals at 2 p.m. and the finals at 5 p.m.

The championship team earns $3,600 in prize money, while second place picks up $1,600. Third- and fourth-place finishers grab $800 apiece and fifth- and sixth-place take home $600 apiece.

The consolation bracket winner takes home $800 and the runner-up earns $500. Paychecks of $250 apiece go to the third- and fourth-place teams, while the fifth- and sixth-place finishers pick up $100 apiece.

New champions will be crowned this year as neither the Pat Paslawski rink (champion) from Whitehorse, Yukon not the Charlotte West (consolation champion) rink of British Columbia are returning to defend their titles.

The event is open to the public and there is a heated spectator gallery overlooking all six sheets of ice.
